Sports report: Football - Year 9 vs. The North School

Monday saw the High Weald Academy football teams start the new season with the Year 9 team playing at home against The North School, Ashford.

With a number of key year 9 players unavailable, a number of year 8 students stepped up to help the team.

Kicking up the slope in the first half, the boys spent most of the half defending, with Samuel Burton proving to be solid at the back with a number of important blocks and tackles. Despite Burton’s heroics and some good goalkeeping from Josh McLaren, the boys found themselves down at half time.

However, just after half time, the goal of the game was scored by Harry Glover. A strong High Weald clearance led to a free kick on the edge of the North box, and Glover stepped up to hit an unstoppable strike in to the top corner of the goal.

The second half was a much more even affair, with the High Weald defence working tirelessly to keep themselves in the game. The game ultimately ended in a High Weald loss, but the year 8 boys who stepped up worked incredibly hard and all of the boys were a credit to the school.

Man of the match was Samuel Burton for an impressive display at centre back.
