More Farm success at the South of England Show
High Weald's Young Famers again performed well against stiff opposition at the South of England Show, last week (11- 13 June 2015).
As soon as we came back from the Heathfield show, we started to prepare for the South of England Show, held at Ardingly in West Sussex. This is a major summer show held over three days. A small but quality team of four beef cattle and one dairy heifer were prepared by our Young Farmers and left for the showground on Wednesday afternoon.
As the classes were split over three days, only the students showing that day attended the show. We had two senior members of the show team and parent helpers looking after them.
Our dairy heifer Pearl, prepared and shown by Archie Reynolds, did very well with strong competition and was well placed.
In the beef handlers competition, again our students performed well with stiff opposition, Kiri Bass won her class. The high point for us was in the commercial beef competition, our four beef cattle were all placed again against professional opposition, our 18 month Belgium Blue X Heifer called Margo was selected as the champion commercial animal – a fantastic result for a small school farm. Joe Gill-Gowes and Kiri Bass had spent hours training and preparing Margo and it was worth it.
Yet again, parent helpers came, stayed and supported us which is so much appreciated.
The team arrived home at 7.30pm on Saturday evening, tired but happy. Our next outing is to the Kent County Show at Detling in July – the preparations have already started!
